Designing a Recovery-Oriented Care Model for Adolescents and Transition Age Youth with Substance Use or Co-Occurring Mental Health Disorders

This report presents findings from a 2008 SAMHSA consultative session focused on designing recovery-oriented care models specifically for adolescents and transition age youth with substance use disorders or co-occurring mental health disorders. Key findings emphasize the critical importance of family involvement at all levels, developmentally appropriate services that acknowledge the nonlinear nature of recovery, and the need for systems integration across substance abuse, mental health, juvenile justice, education, and other sectors. The document also provides concrete recommendations for Federal and State action to advance recovery-oriented systems of care.
