From Father to Father

This resource is a deeply personal narrative by Salvador Hernandez, an immigrant father sharing his journey of raising three children with special needs, including his eldest son Ronald who has Hajdu-Cheney Syndrome. Written as part of Georgetown University’s National Center for Cultural Competence materials, Hernandez candidly describes the multiple challenges he and his family have faced, including language barriers, cultural differences in professional interactions, discrimination, and the financial and emotional toll of navigating complex healthcare and support systems. The narrative serves as both a testament to parental determination and a valuable resource for understanding the intersection of cultural competency, disability advocacy, and immigrant family experiences in accessing special needs services.
