Promising Practices: Community Engagement and Partnerships Improve Access to Medical Homes

This report examines how the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF) successfully improved access to medical homes for children with epilepsy from diverse racial, ethnic, and linguistic backgrounds in Miami-Dade County. The document highlights significant healthcare disparities faced by children with epilepsy, particularly those from Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black families. EFOF addressed these challenges through culturally and linguistically competent approaches, including partnering with Florida’s Children’s Medical Services program, employing bilingual staff, conducting community-specific outreach, and implementing comprehensive language access services. The initiative resulted in 100% of program participants obtaining healthcare coverage and approximately 125 previously uninsured children gaining access to medical homes.
