Building Your Dream Funding Team: Insights from Luminary’s Leaders
Innovation Hub Fellowship Webinar
The Thrive Center Innovation Hub recently hosted an illuminating webinar featuring Luminary’s co-founder Louise Langheier and investment lead Marcy Spector, who shared vital insights on securing funding in the mental health and education sectors.
The discussion challenged common misconceptions about nonprofit versus for-profit funding, with both leaders emphasizing that “the grass isn’t greener” on either side. Spector noted that while nonprofits often envy for-profits’ perceived easier access to capital, and vice versa, “raising money is hard, no matter which operating structure you choose.”
A key takeaway was the importance of building relationships before seeking funding. Langheier shared her experience of maintaining a “dream list” of potential funders while at Pure Health Exchange, emphasizing the value of transparent communication and authentic connections.
The speakers also addressed pressing concerns about changes in education and Medicaid funding. Spector highlighted how organizations need to adapt their strategies, particularly given the end of COVID-era funding and current budget constraints in schools.
Both leaders stressed the importance of hybrid approaches in today’s landscape, especially regarding technology solutions. They noted that while tech-enabled services are crucial, the most successful organizations maintain a human element in their delivery models.
The webinar concluded with practical advice for early-stage organizations, including tips for demonstrating traction and proof of concept to potential investors. Spector shared a five-point framework for effective pitching, emphasizing the importance of clear communication about impact data and revenue strategies.
